IMG_3097.JPGI’ve been looking at all these subscription boxes popping up and really wondered what they were all about.  Two questions really come to mind every time I think about joining one of them.  First, are they going to send me things I really want?  And second, is it worth the money your spending every month?  I’m starting out with Citrus Lane because I thought it would be the best fit for my new little one.

Let’s dig in.

Here’s what my first box looked like:

IMG_3098.JPGIt includes:

3 – vaska laundry detergent samples

1 – Diaper Bag Buddy by Me4Kidz

1 – Aditi Tank Bodysuit from Tea (collection)

1 Hug & Hide Monkey from Skip Hop

The sign up process was really easy on CitrusLane.com.  I like the fact that you could include some specific details to make your box more personalized.  I was able to tell them my daughters age and whether she was a boy or girl.  Then they obviously tailored the box somewhat to her age and sex.

Now, I realize that they buy in bulk and therefore get discounts, which is great for them.  But would it be great for me?  And again, do I really need or want what they are sending me? We’ll take care of the pricing at the end, for now let’s get into what was included.

I should say, at the time I’m writing this review, I’ve had a good 3 weeks with the box and here’s what I’ve found.

The vaska detergent hasn’t been used… yet.  I am totally willing to try it, but we stocked up on so much special detergent for our little one that I’m not ready to try it out quite yet.  It seems good, has good reviews so I’ll give it a shot in the future for sure.

The diaper bag buddy was thrown in the diaper bag and hasn’t been touched.

The Aditi Tank Bodysuit from Tea (collection) hasn’t been worn yet, but we are pretty behind on laundry (hey, can you blame me?  we have a 4 month old running around). I have to say though, it’s probably one of the nicest onesies I’ve ever seen.  I don’t say that lightly either.  It’s made really well (better than some of my clothes I think) and the material is really thick and nice.  Seems like it would last forever. So if you’re looking for clothing that will hold up, or go with you through multiple children you may want to check it out.

And finally, the Hug and Hide Monkey.  I thought it was cute, the inside is comfortable and the baby monkey stays attached by a string, which is nice because otherwise I would have lost it already.  The inside does make some noise when you squeeze, but I don’t think my LO was all that interested in it.  It held her gaze for maybe 30 seconds and that was it.  Now, maybe monkeys just aren’t her think or perhaps my puppet master skills need a bit more mastering.  Who knows.

That’s all the items in the box, let’s get down to the price.

The monthly box is $29.95 if you only subscribe for 1 month.  A 3 month subscription saves you a few bucks at $27.95 a month, and a 6 month plan is $24.95 a month.

If you’ve never used Citrus Lane before, scour the web for some deals.  I got this box for a $19.95 introductory rate.

We’ve searched the web for these items and here’s what we found.

1. vaska detergent you can find on Amazon.com, 25 count package for $8.99

2. diaper bag buddy we found on Amazon.com also for $6.33

(We also found it on Babies ‘R’ Us for $3.99, regularly $4.99)

3. Aditi Tank Bodysuit we found on Tea (collection) for $16.50

4. The Hug and Hide Monkey we couldn’t find anywhere, at least not one that truly matches what I received. The closest I could find is what I’m guessing is the previous version of the Hug and Hide Monkey on Amazon.com. It’s selling for $18.00

Price I paid: $19.95

Retail price of items I received: $41.91 (including $1.08 for the 3 samples of vaska detergent)

So is the value for the money there?  Absolutely.  Did I receive items that I actually needed or wanted?  Not really.  Sure the puppet is cute but it doesn’t really serve a purpose if I can’t get my little one to focus on it.  The diaper bag buddy might come in handy but I’m guessing I’ll forget about it and never use it.  My favorite piece was definitely the onesie from Tea Collection, but I could have saved a few bucks and just bought that.

What do you think?  Have you tried Citrus Lane before?  Or something like it?

  1. Interesting, I always wondered about Citrus Lane, I love their colors and such. If I was a big "I love presents" person, maybe I would sign up because it's like getting a present once a month. In the end it's just stuff. Most mommies know what they like and have what works.

    • That’s a great way to put it! It was kind of fun trying it out, but nothing I could see doing long term. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

  2. This is helpful! I’ve always been curious about subscription services. I tend to be a “practical” person and I like “fluff” items but don’t nexessarily need them. I really appreciate this honest review!
